Total Language Immersion combines language learning with your personal and / or business interests.
Foreign language total language immersion is an excellent, effective combination of: very intensive language lessons and personal interaction (a necessary component of the language learning process).
METHOD:
You study the language in the home of a qualified language teacher.* - You are the only student in the home (unless you come with someone you know). You have meals with the host teacher.
- You receive private tutoring (OTO).
- You learn a foreign language as you learned your own language; you learn a foreign language “doing what comes naturally.”
- You learn it by participating in everyday activities with your host teacher; interacting with the “man on the street.”
- You are matched with host teachers who share some of your interests. Conversations around topics of interest are more relaxed and help the language learning process.
*Or a teacher can come to the home where you are living.
WHO THIS IS FOR:
- “Linguaphile” who wants a very intensive tailor-made language/cultural program;
- Executive or professional who needs to improve language skills in a limited period of time;
- Teacher or professor who needs a super-intensive refresher/review;
- Student of all ages who wants to or needs to improve language skills for an exam, to test out of a certain level, to take a language not offered in his/her own school; or needs an intensive refresher/review;
- Shy student or slower learner who feels more comfortable away from the pressure of the classroom;
- Gifted student who feels he/she is held back by slower learners;
- Seniors who want a different language learning / cultural experience, away from the traditional classroom setting.
- Open to All Ages, unaccompanied - 10 years & older. Even younger students may attend if accompanied by a sibling, friend, parent or legal guardian. There is no upper age limit.

COMMENTS:
- This program is very popular in Europe. Executives and professionals, with limited time to study, choose this program as the most effective use of their time.
- Living in the home of a native speaker is the best choice for learning a foreign language; it is the only way to get used to hearing everyday conversations about everyday situations. Social conversations are the most difficult. Traditional classroom conversations are easier.
Selection of Hosts/Families: We know that many people may be apprehensive about living in the home of a “complete stranger.”
To put your mind at ease… It is the only way to live the language.

In many countries world wide foreign language study is in Foreign Language Immersion Schools.
All schools have a dedicated staff that provides very intensive language instruction in Small Classes or Private Lessons (OTO). All teachers are college graduates.
FLSAS’ selects schools that offer flexible schedules for independent / unaccompanied / individual students as well as for small groups.
In addition to language lessons / language training, the teachers are extremely knowledgeable about the contemporary culture and history of their country and of their region. They offer a complete language immersion and cultural experience.
We prefer independently run, private schools, not university related; schools that have on-site Directors who can resolve problems immediately, and not have to consult with someone in another city or another country or have to wait for bureaucratic decisions.
Locally managed schools more accurately reflect the character and culture of the region.
METHOD:
- Small Classes or Private Tutoring or a combination of both.
- Every school has its own materials and method of instruction.
WHO THIS IS FOR:
- While primarily for adults, these programs are open to all students 18 and over. A few schools accept students at 16, or even 14.
- Younger students are accepted in some cases if accompanied by a parent, older sibling or legal guardian.
- No age group will be out of place. Seniors are always welcome. There is no upper age limit.
LODGING OPTIONS:
HomeStays:
- We prefer to place students in homestays, in the home of a native speaker. Living in the home of a native speaker is the best choice for learning a foreign language. It is the only way to get used to hearing everyday conversations about everyday situations. Classroom conversations are easy. Everyday, social conversations are much more difficult.
Other Arrangements:
Hotels, Residence Halls, ApartHotels, Student Apartments, etc.
- Options depend on country and program. Every country has its way of doing things.
- You can make your own living arrangements.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTING PROGRAMS:
All programs have been chosen for quality:
- of language instruction and materials,- of cultural activities & excursions,
- of the administrative staff,
- of living accommodations,
- and for the variety of sports and other leisure/social activities.

- of language instruction and materials,
- of cultural activities & excursions,
- of the administrative staff,
- of living accommodations,
- and for the variety of leisure / social activities and sports.
COMMENTS:
The following applies to most programs (each program is a bit different):
- Students may go alone (independently) or as part of a small group. Friends may attend together.
- All Levels are Accepted: Absolute Beginner to Native Speaker. (Native Speakers frequently need to improve grammar skills and conversation skills).
- It is not about what you already know, but about what you want to learn.
- Programs are either HomeStays or Residence Halls.
All language learning programs are very intensive. The lessons include grammar, conversation, reading and writing skills. Emphasis is usually on conversation.
All programs have a very complete Cultural / Leisure / Sports Program. The program is a combination of Excursions, Special Events, and Cultural Activities, both on-site and in the area.
All activities, social and cultural, are geared to specific age groups.
Excellent Supervision.
Programs in “the Americas” have students primarily from the U.S. In other countries, there is a very international student body.
